Additional Ways to Practice English Pronunciation
- Choose 5 words from your target. Write them down on a sticky note, a piece of paper or in your smart phone. Place it where you can see it easily. Practice saying these words correctly in a sentence all day.
- Create a script that you write down and practice saying it when ordering a meal at a restaurant.
- Make a to-do list (or grocery list) each day. Write it down and practice reading it. You can do this on your smart phone or on paper.
- Talk about the TV programs you will watch or have seen. Pay special attention to your target sounds.
- Use carryover phrases for conversation, such as, “Hi. How are______?” “What is____?” “I’m _____.” “Who is____?” Be sure to use linking when saying these. For example: “;Howare you”; “Whowis”
- If you have two minutes while driving, especially a local route, you can describe the scenery, the route, etc. You can do this whenever you have a stoplight, also. For example, “th” can be practiced whenever passing a sign reading north or south.
- When practicing the voiceless “th” sound focus on the “th” each time you say “thank you”
- Read aloud your emails. This way you can “kill two birds with one stone”. You have to read your emails anyway and by reading aloud you get to practice your speech goals.
- Practice your speech goals by reading from a book, magazine or newspaper. Reading aloud is a step between word productions and conversational speech. Reading gives you the opportunity to concentrate on specific sounds you have learned as well as linking and intonation.
- When you are learning how to pronounce the NT sounds, count from 20-29. Focus on the NT. (twenny not twen-ty)
- Read an article then explain it to a colleague.
- Retell a movie or TV show you saw to a friend.
- Practice a speech skill for 30 – 60 minutes and then reward yourself with something fun. (Ice cream cone, watch a favorite TV show, go for a walk, call a friend, etc.)
- Work on a puzzle with someone. Every time you speak focus on your speech skills.
- Pick out a joke and practice saying it with great speech in front of a mirror. Record yourself. Then tell your joke to an American speaker.
- Explain directions to someone of how to get to your house or work place.
- Activity to do with an American friend. Put a few object into a bag. Pull out an object and describe it in compete sentences with correct speech.
- Choose a picture in a magazine and describe it in complete sentences.
- Request that a friend ask you interview questions.
- Play act with a friend that you are at a coffee place and you take turns ordering a latte or your favorite kind of coffee. Be sure to spell your name so they won’t get it mixed up with another customer.
- Practice speaking with the skills you have learned so far for 1 minute, about 5 times a day. After a few days, speak for 2 minutes. Increase the time every few days until you can speak clearly for 30 minute intervals.
Ideas to Help You Remember to Use Your New Speech Skills:
- Put a shape (a star, a circle, triangle, something with a texture) in your pocket. Each time you feel it in your pocket, remember to focus on your specific speech skills.(Oh, I need to remember to say my “th” correctly)
- Choose something in your environment that you see frequently, like your watch, a pen, telephone, smart phone, lamp, etc. Choose one object. Every time you that object, it should be a reminder to use your new speech skills.
